What's a Beginner Driver Education (BDE)?

packages

A Beginner Driver Education course is an MTO-approved program that includes 20 hours of online instruction plus at least 10 hours of in-car lessons. Completing a BDE course earns you a certificate that can reduce your G2 wait time and may qualify you for insurance discounts.

Will I receive a certificate for every package?

packages

Only our Certificate (BDE) packages come with the MTO course completion certificate. G2, G, and individual lesson packages do not issue a certificate — they are focused on test preparation and practice.

Do I have to finish my online coursework before starting my in-car training?

scheduling

Yes. Students must complete the online portion of their course before they can begin in-car lessons. This ensures you have a solid understanding of road rules and driving theory before getting behind the wheel.

What if I fall behind on my online classes?

scheduling

If you fall behind on your online coursework, reach out to us and we can help you get back on track. All online classes must be completed before you can begin your in-car training.

How long are in-car driving lessons?

scheduling

In-car lessons are typically 1 to 2 hours long, depending on the package and scheduling. We recommend 1-hour lessons for new drivers to avoid fatigue.

Can I pay by Interac e-transfer?

payment

Yes. At checkout, choose "Pay by e-transfer" and you will receive instructions by email. You can also pay by credit/debit card or cash (in person at your first lesson).

What's your refund policy?

payment

Refund requests after a course has started are subject to a $55 administrative fee. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be forfeited. See our Terms & Conditions for full details.

How old do I have to be to start the BDE course?

packages

You can start the Beginner Driver Education course as soon as you hold a valid Ontario G1 licence, which you can earn at age 16 after passing the written knowledge test at any DriveTest centre (Kitchener's is on Ottawa Street North). There is no upper age limit. We regularly teach adult learners and newcomers to Canada. If you don't have your G1 yet, we can recommend free study resources to help you pass on your first try, then enrol you once you do.

Can I sign up for lessons before I get my G1?

packages

You can purchase and start the 20-hour online portion of our BDE course before you have your G1, but in-car lessons can only begin once your G1 is in hand. That's an MTO requirement. Many students use the wait time to finish the online modules so they can hit the road as soon as they pass the written test. If you're booking only G2 or G road-test prep, you'll need the matching licence class before your first lesson.

How much will the BDE certificate save me on car insurance?

packages

Most major Ontario insurers treat a graduate of an MTO-approved BDE course as if they have three years of driving experience, which typically translates to a 10–25% premium reduction depending on the company. The exact discount varies by insurer, vehicle, and driver profile, so we recommend asking your broker for a quote both with and without the certificate. KWC Drivers is fully MTO-approved, and your completion is reported directly to the Ministry. No paperwork on your end.

When does my BDE certificate get sent to the MTO?

packages

We upload your completion to the MTO within a few business days of your final in-car lesson, and the Ministry typically reflects it on your record within a week. Once it's on file, your G2 wait time drops from 12 months to 8 months, and you can show it to your insurance broker for the discount. If you need written proof in the meantime, just email us and we'll send a stamped certificate the same day.

I have a driver's licence from another country. Do I still need lessons?

tests

Ontario's licence-exchange rules depend on which country issued your licence. Some convert directly, others require you to start at G1 and pass both the G2 and G road tests. Even when lessons aren't mandatory, most newcomers book a few hours with us to get comfortable with Ontario-specific rules like right-on-red, four-way stops, and winter driving. Our G2 and G prep packages are popular with newcomers who already know how to drive but want to pass on the first attempt at the Kitchener test centre.

Do you book the road test for me?

tests

Booking the road test is something you do directly with DriveTest (online at drivetest.ca or by phone), since the appointment is tied to your licence and your payment. We're happy to recommend the best Kitchener time slots based on traffic patterns and your readiness, and we'll always confirm the date with you so we can reserve the car. Once it's booked, let us know and we'll lock in the pre-test warm-up hour.

Can I use your car for my G2 or G road test?

tests

Yes. Every road-test prep package includes use of our dual-brake, MTO-inspected car for your test, plus a one-hour warm-up drive immediately before. Our cars are familiar to local DriveTest examiners and meet every safety requirement, so you won't be turned away for equipment issues. If you'd rather use your own vehicle, we can do the warm-up in it instead, but it must pass the examiner's pre-test inspection.

What happens if I fail my road test?

tests

Failing a test isn't unusual and it doesn't affect your existing licence. You simply rebook with DriveTest (the rebooking fee is around $50–$90 depending on the test class) and try again. We'll review the examiner's score sheet with you, target the specific areas that cost points, and book a focused practice session before the next attempt. Many of our second-attempt students pass with just two extra hours of prep.

Do you pick me up for lessons?

scheduling

Yes, free pickup and drop-off is included with all in-car lessons across Kitchener and Waterloo. Home, school, or workplace, whichever is most convenient. Just confirm the address when you book and your instructor will arrive a few minutes early. If you live outside our standard area, message us and we'll let you know if we can stretch to your location.

What areas do you serve?

scheduling

We serve Kitchener, Waterloo, and the surrounding areas. Road tests are typically run out of the Kitchener DriveTest centre on Ottawa Street North, but we can prep you for any centre in southwestern Ontario. If you're unsure whether we cover your address, send us a quick note before booking and we'll let you know.

What if I need to reschedule a lesson?

scheduling

You can reschedule any lesson at no charge as long as you give us at least 24 hours notice. Just call, text, or email and we'll find a new slot that works. Cancellations inside the 24-hour window are charged a $40 late-cancellation fee, since the instructor's time has already been blocked off. Life happens, so if there's a genuine emergency, reach out and we'll work with you.

Are your cars automatic or manual?

scheduling

Our training fleet is fully automatic, which is what the vast majority of new drivers want and what nearly every road-test vehicle in Ontario uses. We don't currently offer manual-transmission lessons. If you eventually plan to drive a stick shift, we recommend learning the basics in our automatic cars first and adding manual practice with a friend or family member afterward.

What languages do your instructors speak?

scheduling

Lessons can be taught in English, Punjabi, or Hindi. Pardeep and Kawaljit are both fluent in all three and happy to switch as needed. If you or a family member would feel more comfortable getting instructions in Punjabi or Hindi, just mention it when you book. Many of our newcomer students find this makes a big difference in how quickly they pick up Ontario-specific rules.

I'm nervous about driving. Can you still help?

scheduling

Absolutely. A big share of our students start out anxious, and our instructors are patient, calm, and used to building confidence one street at a time. We start in quiet residential areas, move at your pace, and won't push you onto the highway or into heavy traffic until you're ready. Booking a single individual lesson first is a low-pressure way to meet your instructor and see how it feels before committing to a full package.

Can I book just a few lessons for practice or as a refresher?

packages

Yes. Our individual lesson package is sold by the hour and you can book as many or as few as you'd like, whether it's parking practice, highway confidence, or a refresher after years away from the wheel. There's no BDE certificate with these lessons since they're outside the formal course, but they use the same cars, instructors, and pickup service. It's also a popular option for licensed drivers prepping for a specific test or skill.
